until tomorrow
We have time to reflect, to breath, To figure out what we believe, To contemplate dull routines And vacuous material dreams, To seriously prioritise What’s important in our lives. When confined to private places, We long for those open spaces, The purity of air unsoiled, Rugged landscape yet unspoiled, The glory of an ancient Earth, A sense of belonging and what that’s worth. After lockdown will we return To taking what we have not earned Or will we live sustainable lives In the hope our children will survive, Ditching the economics of greed To justly share just what we need? All exterior shots filmed March 2019. Interior shots filmed during lockdown in April 2020. On a hill in the distance, stands a lone building, which she discovers is a long abandoned school hall. A little sun penetrates the dirty glass. An upright piano sits in the far corner. She takes off her muddy boots and with confidence in her gait, strides across to the piano and pulls it by one corner. The rusted wheels are jammed and it pivots, creating an arc. A line is carved in layers of compacted dust and the ancient wooden floor splinters with the weight of the instrument. In the centre of the room, hinged on one foot, she extends her leg and rotates swiftly and with graceful power. Her feet trace, etch and carve in circular movements, creating marks in the layers of dirt. Her body contorts. She throws herself in controlled but frenetic choreography. The movements increase in size and vigour as a pattern emerges. Finally she stands back to witness the impression her dance has etched on the floor. Ruined | Reinventing Scottish History | National Galleries of Scotland
The present meets the past head on in Ruined – currently on display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery – an exhibition in which young people on the Image Liberation Force (2016–2021) project radically reinterpret Scottish history.. These young Scots have mashed up historical paintings in the National Galleries of Scotland’s Scottish art collection and made them live again. The soundtrack to these films has been created by Edinburgh rapper and producer, Mercurius MC (Matt Tulloch), whose visceral delivery spares none of the ghosts of Scotland’s past. As one of the participants on the project puts it: ‘We are the history’. ‘We are ruined. It lies sad and ruined, but it breathes. It revives … because it is you, because it is alive, because it is true.’ A FILM BY LEWIS GOURLAY

The Magic Numbers - Sweet Divide
Romeo of The Magic Numbers contacted Cagoule’s directors, Abby Warrilow and Lewis Gourlay, directly to commision a video for ‘Sweet Divide’ the first single off their forthcoming album ‘Outsiders.’ The track, described by Clash Magazine as ‘a blistering, blues-driven return, pitched somewhere between Free, prime ZZ Top, and early Black Keys,’ harks back to an earlier era and the video follows suit. The brief given to the directors was simple, spend time with the band in their natural habitat of the recording studio where they recorded the album and film the experience. Echo Zoo in Eastbourne is a wonderful collection of vintage analogue hardware. Established in the 1970s, it oozes rock and roll having been graced with the sounds of McCartney and Bowie through its mixing desks. Armed with a camera and a will to make a cracking new video for the band, the directors self shot in a part documentary / part straight up performance style. ‘It's a cool video clip, stylishly shot and displaying the innate chemistry that powers The Magic Numbers’ according to Clash, where it made its online premiere. The Magic Numbers - "You Don't Know Me"
Artist: The Magic Numbers Track: “You Don’t’ know me” Universal Music Director: Cagoule (Lewis gourlay & Abby Warrilow) Producer: Clare Kerr Director of Photography: Pete Warrilow 2nd Camera: Alan Stockdale Choreographer: Abby Warrilow Fight Choreographer: Malcolm Shields Editor: Lewis Gourlay Make-up: Sarah Cairncross Cast: Ross Cooper, Malcolm Shields, locals of “The Strathie” Commissioner Directors Rep: Debs Ramsey @ YI London The brief for the video was to create a character with a twist, the title of the track being “you don’t know me” so the band wanted us to play on the idea that you don’t truly know anyone. A great credit is due to the principal performer Ross Cooper who fulfilled this role impeccably. The location was unlikely venue of an old man’s pub in Cagoule’s home neighbourhood of Leith. “The Strathie”, as you’d expect, is unaccustomed to the world of music video. The residents however warmly embraced the film crew and London based pop rockers The Magic Numbers, even agreeing to play cameo roles in the video. Having shot our last music video on a frozen Scottish moor, we wanted to shoot a bit closer to home. In fact The Strathie is the closest pub to our office. We were thrilled to bring The Magic Numbers to our own backyard and they couldn’t have been more enthused, even playing an impromptu gig in the pub at the end of the shoot, to the delight of the locals. Some notes from Universal Music On Caetano Veloso's 70th Birthday Universal are releasing a tribute album similar to those done for Neil Young, Dylan, Lennon etc. 15 artists including The Magic Numbers, Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Mutantes, Devendra Banhart etc. chose and recorded a track written by Caetano to be included on the CD. The Magic Numbers track is from Caetano’s most acclaimed album –Transa. Music video by The Magic Numbers performing You Don't Know Me. (C) 2012 Universal Music Ltda
